Kristi Engle Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition of sculpture by artist, Laura Larson. This series of small-scale torsos, reminiscent of seamstress dress forms examines the physical body and its changing shapes, values and positions in our culture.
We genuflect to the ethereal beauty of the body as well as its physicality. The body is worshipped, then ogled. It is perhaps thanks to this duality that the body had been used as such an effective tool in the art of persuasion. Larson explores the tropes and archetypes of the human form as she provokes us to consider a body's worth and the qualities that inform one's decisions.
Larson forcibly places a monetary value on the body in all of its variety. This vigorous system of commerce with levels of importance and cost reveals a common ground between different types and ironically demonstrates the salability of them all. Larson encourages an inspection of her work in which to puzzle over their illusive value.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Laura Larson will give an artistÕs talk on March 11, 2007 at 4:00 pm.
Exhibition Catalogues will also be available.
Kristi Engle Gallery devotes itself primarily to solo exhibitions of new works by contemporary artists. It is located in Highland Park, near the corner of Ave. 50 and York Blvd.
