Jocelyn Foye's work has for some time been concentrated on the examination of movement. Using different mediums from clay to sand, Foye has recorded the movements of Greco-Roman wrestlers, cheerleaders, roller derby girls, ballet dancers and sumo wrestlers in an attempt to create a static, aesthetic interpretation of those movements.

For her exhibition at Kristi Engle Gallery, Foye will be using this opportunity to expand on her earlier processes and practices by including performance, 2-dimensional work as well as audience participation. For this particular exhibition, Foye will be using the world of competitive Air Guitar as her "palette."

Fatima Hoang (2005 US Air Guitar Champion, as well as 2004, 2005, 2007 Los Angeles Regional & 2008 San Diego Regional Champion) and Janice Gomez (2010 Los Angeles Regional Air Guitar Champion), are both respected contemporary artists as well as champion Air Guitarists and have been working in collaboration with Foye allowing her to introduce both stages of her process into the gallery simultaneously.

While Foye's work has an important performative component, it has usually occurred under Foye's direction in her studio (or other venue). It is the lasting documentation of that performance whether photographic or cast sculpture that ends up on exhibition. Because of this, the majority of Foye's opening receptions and performances, have not included the "final product." However, her collaborations with Hoang and Gomez have allowed her to show both stages of her process. A cast plastic final stage of the clay negative inverse which Hoang & Gomez performed on, in Foye's studio will be on exhibit during the opening reception/performance as well as for the duration of the exhibition. The performance in the gallery space will be an air guitar competition with Hoang and Gomez as "judicators," helping create the negative inverse for a "sculptural relief painting" by choosing the finalists who will then perform on clay. The consequent negative inverse relief will be used to then create another cast which will be exhibited after the performance and for the remaining exhibition.

In addition to the competition itself, the gallery walls will be covered with chalk stripes, an ephemeral component of the exhibition, will represent the movements of the audience as they rub and lean on the walls during the performance, smudging the straightedges of the stripes.

Jocelyn Foye received her MFA from California State University, Long Beach, she has shown her work all over Southern California, including the Torrance Art Museum with an upcoming show at the Armory in Pasadena. This year she was granted a California Community Fund Fellowship for Visual Artists. She lives and works in Long Beach, CA.

Kristi Engle Gallery devotes itself primarily to solo exhibitions of new works by contemporary artists. It is located in Highland Park, near the corner of Ave. 50 and York Blvd.
