“A Little Louder: Performance in Conversation“
Every other month from February to August @ Kristi Engle Gallery in Highland Park
In this series, arists/curators Asher Hartman and Carol McDowell look at the ideas of conversation and performance to ask simply, 'what are people thinking?" Artists in this series are invited to perform, converse, and listen with singular purpose of circulating new ideas through the lens of performance.
The pairing of artists asks us to look in between art works, at the electric space of gaps and connection. Listening can be like scavenging, collecting facets of thought-- concerted statements and unplanned segues--detailing what the speaker is conscious of (or not). meshing with and advancing our own ideas.
As performance practitioners, we're curious about the nature of what we do, its exigencies, and how it responds or recedes from the larger cultural landscape. We invited people who are simply interesting to watch, to listen to, whose ideas give us ideas. We hope you'll join us in the spirit of exploration and discovery.
OPENING EVENT: DOUGLAS KEARNEY and PEDESTAL & the ALL GIRL BAND (P$tAGB) February 19th, 2011, 8pm - midnight
Poet and performer, Douglas Kearney reads from his collection of works, including his new chapbook Quantam Spit ("even this country's love smells of gunpowder...") and his new CD, There are Sharks in This Poem, live readings from The Black Automaton.
Pedestal & the All Girl Bank (P$tAGB) welcomes you to join the party of Pop. Primary party planners and karaoke agitators, Andy Manoushagian, Hataya Tubtim, and Paige Tighe will perform the Top 10 of the Modern World, those at the peak of the charts during some of the 20th century's most significant conflicts. You'll be inspired by hits from World War II, the Trade Center bombings, Rwandan genocide, Iraq invasion and more! It's a tribute to American pop songs that have helped inspire all sides in tragedies across the globe.
